Design Thinking Process
Mindsets
Learning about the seven mindsets: creative confidence, make it, learn from failure, empathy, embrace ambiguity, optimism, and iterate became more meaningful when we as a team project went through each of those in our design thinking process. We experienced empathy when we get to talk to real CM major students and conducted interviews. Then we felt optimism because we believed we had all the answers to re-design or create a new website for the CM department. Then we iterate when we went back to re-consider our HMW questions and tried several times to come up with the right one. After that, we create with confidence some sketches, and make some prototypes. Then we went to test our prototype and embraced the ambiguity of not knowing what to keep, what to take off and what to change. After we failed to organize the information correctly many times, we learnt from it and re-considered our HMW question once more.
Methods
The methods of inspiration, ideation and implementation were and interesting process that in my opinion can only be fully experienced when working on a team. A team of different backgrounds, or in other words, people with different perspectives and abilities. I felt inspired by the people we interviewed and the things we learnt from them, then when we were working on ideate and gather ideas I was amazed by the progress we could make by working together and helping one another to see from different points of view. I would have never got the level of understanding I got of the problem we were trying to solve without the helpful insights of our classmates. Then we all contributed to implement the department requirements and other important student considerations in our website. Team work is awesome and it works wonderfully.
The Gold Nugget
The "gold nugget" pointed to changing the culture of CM future and current students to help them believe that the BYU-I CM website can provide the information they need in an efficient way. In our generation, we are used to technologies like Google, Siri, Alexa to find what we need. Adding a LinkedIn button was a "key piece" on the table that took us over the wall because it will help students and prospective students to connect with one another and other professionals in the CM industry. It can become the reason why students will want to visit the CM website: because it will have a direct link to find the CM department group on LinkedIn and get job/internship offers as well as networking.
